01 – Astrology in the work of Éliphas Lévi

    12.00

« Of all the occult sciences astrology is the most important for it is the key to all the others and, in particular, to Kabbalah and Hermetism. Eliphas Lévi did not write a book, or rather I would say a text book, on astrology for he held this science in such high regard and was so horrified to see the the extent to which it had been popularized, that he preferred to conceal it throughout his work. »

  • 02 – An Introduction to numerology

02 – An Introduction to numerology

    12.00

« The key of numbers is, then, the key of symbols, for symbols are the analogical representations of the harmony that comes from numbers. Mathematics could not, then, prove a blind fatality for it expresses the exactitude which is characteristic of the most perfect reason. Not only do numbers rely on reason itself, but they are also poets, for they sing with a music that is always in tune and which lent raptures to the genius of Pythagoras. And when it is said that numbers are repellent for poetry, in a sense that is true, for a digit is like a garment that clothes the number that is its soul. So a digit studied in the context of the exact form of numbers is the one that will measure and give rhythm to poetry. On this subject Lévi says « Thus occult philosophy, the most poetic of all, is par excellence the philosophy of exact sciences ».

  • 03 – Woman in the manifestation of her social and divine being

03 – Woman in the manifestation of her social and divine being

    12.00

« Female emancipation (…) is the most serious issue to preoccupy all the thinkers of our age. Woman is indeed born equal to man and it would be unreasonable to dispute this. Man, it is true, possesses the material force that offers physical protection. But women are endowed with a surer tact, a loving and more astute intelligence to direct and moderate the strength of men. To take advantage of this brute force in order to desecrate woman and impose on her something arbitrary rather than the rule of liberty, is to commit a gross injustice. Everyone is capable of understanding this, without the need for proof. I would also suggest that since love’s intuition or, in other words, sentiment is usually the surest measure of reason, woman is necessary to the development of our intelligence and that she is the mother both of our body and our soul. »

04 – Magic in the work of Éliphas Lévi

    12.00

« This is one of the most graceful images from the Gospel. A Virgin is seated among the ruins of the ancient world which are represented by the debris of an old palace that has been transformed into a stable. The majesty of her grace and modesty make of her a queen and she is blessed with a beautiful child who holds out his hands in a naive gesture of love. The three aspects of the known world arrive, with the appearance of wise men and dressed as kings, to bow down before the Man of the Future, Christ born, the Man- God who will save the world.
There is a star as yet unseen in the heavens above the wretched dwelling where the universe has just been reborn, and the magi who were guided by it recognize in this helpless child the explanation and incarnation of the truth that is hidden in their astronomical and mysterious beliefs. The winter of mankind gives way to a heavenly spring and the constellation of the virgin sees the gentle sun of the new season emerge from her breast. »

  • 05 – Symbolic of the binary

05 – Symbolic of the binary

    12.00

Éliphas Lévi tells us that the binary « is also the number of gnosis ». Given that gnosis is a synonym for wisdom, there are far-reaching consequences for the number two, which is often summed up in the terms ‘duality’ and ‘opposition’. Thus in the mind of Éliphas, whose reasoning depends on the principle of the Kabbalah, the number two takes on an altogether different meaning. Éliphas explains that the wise men of antiquity used the word gnosis to express the idea of knowledge through intuition. Now knowledge presupposes the binary, for the being who possesses knowledge also requires a known object : two terms, then, in order to have the knowledge that results in wisdom. Another important point : we must not confuse numerals with numbers. Since the numeral represents what our body is to our spirit, it can be compared with our body, it is material and serves us as a vehicle, just as the body serves as a vehicle to the spirit. When we speak of numerals we have a notion of classification, we count something that is tangible, we number, enumerate, compute and calculate states and memories and so on in order to arrive at a quantity or classification.

06 – The complex idea of Lucifer «bringer of light» in the work and the genethliac chart of Éliphas Lévi

    12.00

« On this 8 February 1981 it is 171 years since the birth of the man whose purpose was to bring light to men. Did he foresee that 171 years later other people, in their modest way, would also try to be the bearers of light ?
But wanting to be the bearer of light is not the same thing as being able to do so. Just as each planet has its role to play in the grand theatre of the cosmic universe, so each one of us down here has his. But playing one’s role requires knowledge and understanding.
So it is not without emotion that I attempt to speak to you about the man who is my father, my master and, I would dare to say, my friend. »

  • 08 – An Introduction to Hermeticism, the wisdom of the ancients

08 – An Introduction to Hermeticism, the wisdom of the ancients

    12.00

“If we have the curiosity to look in the dictionary, we are surprised to see that the word « Hermeticism » did not exist in the 19th century. We learn, however, that Hermetic comes from Hermes, which in Greek represents Mercury.
Hermetic also signifies « that which relates to Hermes, to the science of Hermes Trismegistus », to « alchemy ». His name, Trismegistus,
contains the notion three times greatest, that is to say
    – Hermetic philosophy
    – Hermetic art
    – Hermetic medicine.
The name was given to a perfect closure, chiefly that which is obtained when the edges of a container, or a cover or anything else are fused, an invention with which Hermes Trismegistus is credited. In everyday language the word has gone on to mean anything that
    is perfectly sealed.
The ancients also used Hermes’ name to designate a pedestal bearing the head of Mercury and, later, any other head that would be placed at a crossroads. This led to the term hermetic column, used in architecture to designate any column with a man’s head for a capital.
These various explanations may seem to be getting off the point but in fact will be very useful in helping us to understand a subject as vast as this one.”

09 – The Grand Arcanum and the Great Work Based on an unpublished text by Éliphas Lévi

    12.00

Before looking at the text itself I shall start with an introduction and place the work in the context of its time.
Early in 1868 Eliphas had the idea of writing a new work about black magic, about the mysteries of madness and perversity and of
    the condition known as possession.
« The work I have begun, » he was to write, « is the reconciliation of reason with religious sentiment that is natural to any elite soul.
My purpose is not to demolish old temples but to open their doors and allow the light to enter. » He completed the first two parts in June 1868 and this was the first version of what would become The Grand Arcanum.

11 – Elements, worlds and the alchemical realm

    12.00

At our last meeting on 2 February dealing with writings and teaching alchemical Eliphas Levi reserved only to a very small number of his followers, we flew (and I mean flew alas!), because time is still too short to see everything, one of the two covers of the great book of Nicolas Flamel found by Eliphas and we were able to realize how important was “the cross” we project you again so you can remind yourself of its symbolism. He is alone all the alchemical work which breaks through the elements, the worlds and realms.
We must not forget that the elders who had neither the benefits nor the great facility of printing, liked to keep all the science in a book, and of course a whole book in a symbol and why they had the syntheses hieroglyphic called “pantacles” and rather mysterious book called the “golden books” .E.
